Derrick Y. McDaniel, “Mr. Eldercare 101” Author of critically acclaimed “Eldercare, The Essential Guide To Caring For Your Loved One and Yourself”, Senior Executive, Primary Caregiver, and International Speaker
I’ve Today 1-in-3 U.S. adults is dealing with an Eldercare challenge (from the “Employer Perspective” : 1-in-5 workers).
Years of experience
There are 4 types of people in this world: those who have been caregivers; those who currently are caregivers; those who will be caregivers; and those who will need caregivers.
Former First Lady Roselyn Carter
Which Type of person are you?
The responsibility of caring for an aging loved one quickly overwhelms most people. That’s what happened to me. Over the last 2 decades I’ve made it my life’s work to share information and educate caregivers so they can continue to care for their own health, careers, finances, and relationships while they care for their elderly loved ones.
I wrote my book Eldercare, The Essential Guide To Caring For Your Loved One And Yourself because when I needed REAL answers to questions and ACTIONABLE solutions to caregiver challenges I couldn’t find them. When I needed practical guidance on everything from communicating with family members to understanding and paying for caregiving options it wasn’t available. The absolute worse part was that much of the guidance I received was “bad” guidance-that was technically accurate. That realization is terrifying. Eldercare, information is NOT “one size fits all”. Unfortunately, the best and most appropriate guidance came from expensive lawyers and consultants-which is unfair. That’s why I wrote my book and that’s why I’m so passionate when I speak.
Most caregivers realize quickly they are not prepared to be caregivers. I hear it almost every day. They have no idea what’s necessary, where to find reliable information, and how providing care will impact them as caregivers. That’s why I’ve made it my mission to provide REAL and ACTIONABLE solutions to real caregiver challenges. Not having the correct information will literally impact the your loved one’s quality of care; and the caregivers quality of life.
Truthfully, I was scared every day not knowing what to do, where to go for answers, who to listen to and what the best solutions were. I was confident of only one thing-that nothing in my academic background or life experience prepared me to be a caregiver to my grandmother. She’d always cared for me, and I wanted to care for her. Suddenly being responsible for the person who had always been responsible for me created a new and strange reality for me. The impacts were physical, mental, emotional, financial, and professional. I was overwhelmed in so many ways and didn’t know where to turn.
Over the past two decades I’ve made it my life work to help so many people along their caregiving journeys. I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to be BOTH a primary caregiver to an aging loved one and eldercare industry expert so I get both perspectives and understand “how” and “why” of both sides.
Audiences “feel” my passion at my live events but are often surprised by how much they laugh while learning how to care for themselves as they care for others. Admittedly, that my favorite part. Having been a primary caregiver and an industry practitioner for so long my experience and a unique perspective allows me to see not only the challenges but the humor and benefits of being a caregiver. Trust me, being able to laugh about it, and knowing the personal benefits of caregiving are all that keep you going some days. Book me for your next event and let me share some essential information and funny stories with you and your group.
